Reflection #3: how to, and how not to be, a networked citizen

2020 has been the year of the networked citizen. Our reliance on technology has grown exponentially stronger due to the implications of the pandemic, and online platforms have allowed us to stay connected with others. In our EdTech class, we had the wonderful privilege of listening to Jesse Miller chat about the impact that social media and mobile tech has had on the education field.

With the prevalence of social media, professional responsibility and media literacy has become vital. This juxtaposes my experience with social media which has been utilized predominantly for personal use. Hearing from Jesse allowed me to understand that technology can be utilized as a means to enhance students learning. This class is one example of the positive impact of technology on education! For example, we have learned about various resources and tools that can be used in our future practice. We have also learned about the potential for opportunities through the effective use of networking platforms such as Twitter.

If there is one thing that I am taking away from this discussion it is this:

We hold great responsibility for the tools that students will use. However, with this responsibility comes great power to decide how it will be used.

I hope as a future educator, I can bring education-related technology into the classroom to positively impact the wellbeing and learning of my students!

I want to enjoy Twitter so bad, but I am still facing a bit of a learning curve. I have a lot of work to do before I am comfortable with tech, let alone tech in the classroom. I too hope that I get to a place where I can bring edtech into the classroom and have it positively affect students – learning more and getting closer every day!
